# RNAV
Defined as part of the airspace regulations FAR 71. Last note clarifying it's definition https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2003/05/09/03-11638/establishment-of-area-navigation-routes-rnav
Part 71 defines the classes of airspace (A, B, C, D, E, (G)) and Air Trafic Service routes (and reporting points).
The FAA has harmonized definitions with ICAO and US and Canadian RNAV routes are given the Q designator
After removing the routes and reintroducing them, the definitions of RNAV applications shifted to a performance based specification (rather than specific features).
